A few weeks ago, Brian Halcomb, the guitar player from Qualone contacted me via email. You see, I subscribe to a magazine called Magnet and every issue comes with a sampler CD with new music on it. These Magent CDs make it into my collection, and then appear in my All-Request Radio. Brian discovered my radio had played Qualone, but rather than sending me the Cease and Disist letter I’ve always been expecting (and I’m sure I will receive someday), he offerred to send me the whole CD.
If you’ve ever had to spend time with me when I’ve been drinking, you’ve probably heard me ramble on about my thoughts on music discovery, marketing, and distribution. I’ll even talk about it when I’m sober. I won’t go into my inebriated, poorly structured schpeel here… if you really want to hear it, just grab a nice bottle of Cognac and show up at my door. But, anyway…
As far as I’m concerned, Qualone gets it. They’re more concerned about having people hear they’re music than they are (currently) concerned with revenues. Why make music if no one is going to hear it? The only way for people to hear it is for them to know about it. Without fans, there are no revenues. [Ed.* note: Long rambling section deleted]. There are many ways for people to learn and listen to new music, and my all-request radio is one of them. So play the Qualone pick of the week. It really deserves a listen.
And most importantly: If you like this band, support them by purchasing the music on iTunes or amazon.com. Or check out their merchandise page for more details.
* Yes, that’s me, not a guy named Ed. I’m editing myself.
